Retreating from the magnetic pull of Tanaquil was a Herculean task. My body yearned to continue the delicate moment of intimacy, a primal instinct gnawing at my self-control, but I had long mastered the art of defiance against instinct. I'd tamed the Hunger, this should be no different.
Tanaquil regarded me, her green eyes shining like emerald stars in the dim light, cheeks flushed. She brushed her fingers against my cheek, sending a wave of electricity through me. Capturing her palm in mine, I lowered my lips to it, feeling her warm skin against my lips.
Her soft laugh filled the air, a soothing counterpoint to the throbbing of my pulse. "I think maybe waiting until we've known each other for two days might be a good idea," she suggested, her voice quivering with suppressed mirth.
"As you wish," I concurred, attempting to match her humor with my own.
As we fastened our seatbelts and pulled away from the rest area, the rich scent of her hair filled the cabin. Chocolate-brown strands cascaded down her back, enticingly wild as the woman herself. The athletic grace of her form drew my gaze from the road more often than it should, her tall frame lithe and strong.
She leaned toward the windows, her brows furrowing slightly in concentration. "The turn-off is a hidden drive," she explained. "And it's not on the GPS. It's almost a mile before what the GPS states as the destination. I've never driven this at night, though. You might want to slow down."
I complied, slowing the car, and earning the ire of our tail. A car had shadowed us for nearly a hundred miles, a silent specter that appeared and vanished at regular intervals in our rearview mirror. My mind wagered on whether it was one of Bran or Reynard's people. I was unsure of the threat they perceived we were stepping into but appreciated the thought.
"Tell me about your friend," I asked, partly to hear her voice. It soothed and excited me on a deep level, the man desiring her, and the Hunger driven to drowse.
"Ximena Lucerno, Shay to her friends," Tanaquil began. âShe's...Shay's got some problems. I don't know how, but she seems to know everything that's going on, sometimes before it happens. Kind of like the text. There's no way she could have known that I needed help, but there she is, and when I didn't answer she somehow knew that Cassie was there. Given you and your friends, I'm wondering if she's, you know, special. But if she is, it's both helped and hurt her. She's crazy rich. Anything she invests in turns into gold. That just means her family is always after her for money. Everyone's always after her for money actually, and she sees things that she doesn't want to see. Since nobody else in her family can do whatever she does, I donât know though. Maybe itâs a fluke.â
Her green eyes turned pensive, her long fingers fiddling with the edge of her seatbelt. Her worry was palpable, coloring the air between us.
